Great developer experience doesn't happen by accident. At Thieme, we want engineers to spend their time building great digital products, not fighting tooling, waiting for feedback or searching for the right way to get things done.
As our Staff Engineer (m/f/d) Developer Experience, you will improve how engineers work across teams, tools and processes. You identify friction and unnecessary complexity along the developer journey, turn insights into concrete improvements and help create an engineering environment in which the easiest way of working is also the right, secure and scalable one.
You will work hands-on while connecting the dots between engineering teams, Platform, Infrastructure, Architecture, Information Security and our Communities of Practice.
Your goal: make developer experience at Thieme measurably better.
Your role & your impact
Improve the developer experience end to end:
- Identify where engineers lose time, face unnecessary complexity or struggle with tooling, processes, information or cross-team dependencies.
- Combine engineer feedback with data such as DORA and flow metrics, CI performance and review turnaround to identify and prioritize systemic friction.
- Turn insights into improvements, measure their impact and continuously evolve the developer experience.
Build and evolve engineering golden paths
- Make common engineering tasks easier through effective tooling, automation and supported golden paths, from local setup and testing to development and staging environments.
- Ensure engineers can easily find relevant standards, documentation, examples, reusable components and ownership information.
- Work with Platform, Architecture, Information Security and engineering teams to integrate security and compliance into these paths wherever possible.
Create a strong technical onboarding experience
- Develop a consistent technical onboarding path together with Engineering Managers, HR and IT.
- Reduce setup friction and enable new engineers to contribute to production-bound code as quickly as possible.
- Continuously improve onboarding based on feedback and insights from new team members.
Enable AI-assisted engineering
- Establish effective and responsible practices for AI-assisted software development across engineering teams.
- Collaborate with the AI Guild and Information Security on shared practices and appropriate guardrails around coding agents, permissions, secrets and data protection.
- Measure adoption and impact and continuously improve AI-supported engineering workflows.
Deliver improvements hands-on and through others
- Prototype and implement improvements where possible and translate broader friction into concrete requirements for the relevant teams.
- Pilot solutions with engineering teams, evaluate their impact and help successful approaches scale across the organization.
- Partner with Engineering Managers and Communities of Practice to embed improvements into existing ways of working.
- Create transparency around priorities, progress and impact through a visible Developer Experience roadmap and regular results.
Your profile
Tech Stack (for context, not required): Java ∙ TypeScript ∙ GitLab ∙ Kubernetes ∙ Azure and on-premises ∙ GitHub Copilot ∙ Claude Code
Requirements:
- 7+ years as a software engineer building products in large codebases, with hands-on ownership of CI/CD, testing infrastructure and developer tooling.
- Deep hands-on skills in local development: build tools, package managers, containers and local environments, test strategy, connections to cloud and data-centre environments.
- Daily practice with AI coding agents (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or comparable), including permissions, sandboxing, secrets and data protection.
- Product thinking towards developers as users: interviews, surveys, data, SQL and dashboards.
- Experienced in driving adoption across several teams without formal authority. Writes well and presents to senior leadership as convincingly as to engineers.
- Fluent German and English.
Advantageous:
- DevEx frameworks (SPACE, DORA, DX Core 4)
- has run developer experience or a developer platform as a product
- platform engineering or SRE background
- observability and debugging tooling
- regulated environments (ISO 27001), ideally with compliance evidence automated in the delivery pipeline
